Dr. Mary Olds followed her loving, brilliant, adventurous yet eccentric husband Dr. Louis Olds into the wilderness of southwest Florida leaving behind the homeopathic medical practice they shared, the home she knew, the church she loved, the close family she cared about, as well as the college friends she adored.
The stark difference of the world she left behind and the brash, unschooled, churchless and pioneer hardships, she encountered in her new home was very hard for Mary. In 1884 she wrote her Smith College classmates, “It was as if she had stepped into the world her grandparents or great grandparents knew.” Her challenge was to make a civilized home in the Florida wilderness for her husband and thee young daughters. It turned out to be the greatest challenge of her whole life.
