Legends of Goodland
Legends of Goodland, Interviews with Kappy Kirk & her friends
NEW published 2021!
Kappy Kirk was one of the oldest, if not the oldest, resident still living in Goodland since its beginning. Raised as a daughter by Tommie Barfield, she combined the history of the three communities in her own person: Goodland, Marco and Caxambas and called the old historic buildings of the island home: the Heights Hotel, Marco Lodge, the Barfield House and her own home in Goodland going on 100 years old. Her husband Bud Kirk lived to fish; it was his occupation and first love. The old time fishermen used to catch their ‘Christmas Money’ in October gathering in the lower Matecumbe Keys each October. That is where Bud Kirk met Bud Shulberg, author of the book and movie “Wind Across the Everglades.” Kappy tells this story as she recounts the history of the little commercial fishing village of Goodland and how it suddenly grew one long hot summer.
